Transitions

I decided to write about transitions this week because I’m experiencing one myself.

Walking through the Himalayas, I realized I was missing a sense of structure. For nearly seven months, I have lived the life of a nomad, which is suitable for earning air miles and hotel points, but not for maintaining peace of mind.

I divorced last year and almost simultaneously started working with a client who required me to be in London. I left most of my belongings in storage in Prague, packed a few suitcases, and left.

London was new and exciting, and the project was both rewarding and challenging. I also took the opportunity to travel to Australia to see friends and skip a month of winter. I returned to London and started increasing my running mileage and training for my hike in Nepal (see last week).

I occupied my mind with new experiences. Life was good.

Then, I started my hike in Nepal.

I had ample time to think. I was in a group, but we walked in a single file most of the day. The moments you walk on flat and wide terrain and have time to talk are rare.

In the evenings, you unpack in your new lodge, drink tea, decide whether to shower today, tomorrow, or later, and play cards. I played decently when it was the four of us. After one of us had…
