Respect. Integrity. Communication. Excellence.

These are four powerful words that most companies would happily embrace if their culture truly reflected their meaning.

However, we can argue whether these words are proper descriptors of company values.

What if your company was not excellent? Does that mean that mediocre performance is now acceptable? Doesn’t anyone aspire to be excellent? You would not put mediocrity in your values, would you? I believe excellence needs more meat to the bone to trigger curiosity and make a difference.

Back to Respect. Integrity. Communication. Excellence. And why I started with them in this insight.

These four values are also shortened as R.I.C.E., as in Rise. These four values were the foundation of Enron, a gas company in Texas that once belonged to the largest businesses in the United States.

Not anymore.

The spectacular demise of Enron is one of the most infamous corporate collapses in U.S. history. It was characterized by massive accounting fraud, mismanagement, and unethical practices.

Enron’s values were more rhetorical than practical, as the company’s leadership engaged in highly unethical behaviors.
