Do you enjoy being wrong?

Diversity, as most of us know it, is a farce.

This is strongly expressed, but many companies pay lip service to several stakeholders and their metrics without investing in true diversity. That’s the scope of this insight.

Diversity is not about ticking boxes for gender, race, age, religion, or belief. Diversity is about embracing various perspectives and experiences that these differences bring.

We’re looking in the wrong direction with diversity. When I see reports about the percentage of women in top leadership positions, I do believe those companies are doing something right. Yes, we do need more female leaders.

But not because they’re women.

That’s the problem here. We communicate to the outside world that we have more women on our boards, and the world applauds us. We have fulfilled our metric; the world likes us for it, and that’s it.

But that’s not it. Great employers know this. Diversity is not a number or a percentage. It’s not look at us; look at our metrics.

Placing women in leadership positions is a means to an end. It’s not about the number of women. It’s about how women will contribute to the growth and culture of the organization.
