Ask any member of a high-performing team what they consider the qualities of the team, and for sure, part of their answer will include a version of these words:

“We’re clear about where we’re going, why we’re going there, and how we may get there.”

People love to be part of clear teams and work for leaders who provide that clarity.

Clarity releases energy. Lack of clarity sucks energy. Even if you don’t like the clarity provided, it’s clear what’s needed. There’s no ambiguity.

We already have enough ambiguity to deal with, so any ambiguity we can delete makes life easier.

Take Apple. They are clear about who they are, how they want to compete, their business, and the products they develop.

It doesn’t mean that their vision doesn’t evolve. However, any new addition to their product portfolio is scrutinized through experimentation. The development team is separated from the ongoing business teams, and if the results don’t meet the standards, the experiment is canceled. Apple was long rumored to be working on an electric car, but the experiment never saw the light of day.
